I know there are tweets flying by that I’m missing right now. My friends are posting funny clips on Facebook. My LinkedIn groups are discussing important topics without me. Can I stop myself from looking? I want to look! I can see my email inbox has new messages. And, Skype is ringing. Do I answer the call?
I have projects piled high and a to do list as long as my arm. How am I supposed to get anything done while my social group is off networking without me?
With all of the updates, tweets, chats, and webcasts, social media has taken over our lives. I find it harder and harder to concentrate over long periods of time and get big projects done efficiently. I keep stopping to check what people are up to.
Then, I stumbled over Freedom. It shuts down your network for a predetermined amount of time giving you the freedom to focus. And it's free. Freedom currently only works for Mac (OS X). I searched but couldn't find a similar tool for the PC (Linux or Windows). Maybe there's one out there.
How do you carve out time away from the Web to concentrate?
